Lung Disease

Those at Risk

Many types of jobs are associated with health hazards, and the lungs are among the most vulnerable parts of the body to airborne threats. Exposure to some substances can lead to occupational lung disease and in some cases, even lung cancer. Occupations especially at risk are: miners, farmers, asbestos handlers, printers, painters, flavoring specialists, sandblasters, cement and concrete finishers, bricklayers, welders, ironworkers, shipbuilders, and those working with epoxy resins or isocyanates.

Irritants

The tubes that carry air in and out of our lungs are called bronchi. The bronchi, along with the nasal passages, provide excellent protection against most natural irritants. Unfortunately, modernization and industrialization exposes our pulmonary systems to many irritants that we simply are not equipped to process on our own which can lead to lung disease.

Silicosis

Symptoms of silicosis include any of the following: shortness of breath, lung disease, pulmonary problems, chronic or severe cough, chest pain, fatigue, fever, lack of appetite, cyanosis or blue skin or tuberculosis. Chronic cases occur after long-term exposure of at least ten years. Acute cases occur after short-term, high exposure, which are usually a few weeks to five years. Accelerated cases occur after high exposure these cases can develop between five and ten years.

Asbestosis/Mesothelioma

Asbestos inhalation can cause Asbestosis, a scarring of the lungs that leads to breathing problems and heart failure. Workers who manufacture or use asbestos products and have high exposures to asbestos are often affected with Asbestosis lung disease.
