Medical Malpractice
|
Two examples of medical malpractice are involved in the death of Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley. Simply stated, a medical doctor prescribed the wrong doses of prescription medicine in each case that led to the death of these young men. Of course, each of them were responsible for abusing legal and illegal drugs but a medical doctor is bound by his professional oath and by criminal law from prescribing drugs to known drug addicts.
Malpractice involving prescription drugs usually involve negligence not intentional conduct which means that doctors make a mistake by accident, not on purpose. This is also a problem with pharmacists.
Other examples of malpractice include operating on the wrong part of someone’s body due to confusion as to the identity of the patient. You can read of these acts daily on the Internet and in newspapers. Patients have been admitted to the hospital for minor surgeries only to awake to a missing leg or not to awake at all. How many times have you heard the story of a surgeon removing the wrong leg of a patient and then having to remove the other leg too?
Common mistakes in hospital include improper sanitation by workers resulting in the spread of staph infections and other diseases. I personally witnessed a nurse deal with a well-used bedpan and then change a bandage on a back surgery patient, who happened to be my mother. I corrected them immediately and I wasn’t very nice about it.
