Ketek Claims

Ketek (telithromycin) is an antibiotic manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis that is used in patients 18 years of age and above for 5-day treatment of acute bacterial infections such as chronic bronchitis and sinusitis. At times it is used in a 7 to 10 day treatment of mild to moderate community-acquired pneumonia.

An article in the January 20, 2006, Annals of Internal Medicine, linked use of Ketek to two cases of liver failure and one case of hepatitis. Since that time, an FDA memo has reportedly linked Ketek to twelve cases of liver failure and four deaths. The company’s website for the drug warns of risks of “Hepatic dysfunction, including increased liver enzymes and hepatitis, with or without jaundice has been reported with the use of Ketek. The manufacturer says that caution should be used in patients with a previous history of hepatitis/jaundice associated with the use of Ketek®. However, FDA safety reviewers are looking for a stronger warning that indicates “severe, life threatening, and in some cases fatal” liver damage has been caused by the drug. Over 3 millions prescriptions have been issued with incorrect warnings within the U.S.

What are the symptoms of liver failure? Symptoms include: nausea, fatigue, dark urine, malaise, yellow skin, yellow eyes, loss of appetite, blurry vision, high levels of liver enzymes, unconsciousness, hepatitis, and abdominal pain. If you experience any of these symptoms contact your physician.
