Searching for a Paxil Lawyer?
Paxil is dangerous and you or a loved one may have been unfairly harmed by it. Like many other antidepressants, it has been linked to a wide variety of unwanted side effects. And if you are reading this, you are probably wondering if you have grounds to file a Paxil lawsuit.
The Origins of Paxil
Sold by GlaxoSmithKline, Paxil is an antidepressant marketed for treatment of:
- Depression
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
- Anxiety
- Other stress disorders
The drug was approved by the FDA at the end of 1992. Evidence suggests that this approval came directly following less than desirable trial runs in underdeveloped countries. Did the FDA drop the ball on this one?
Paxil Presents an Unnecessary Yet Extremely Serious Risk to Unborn Babies
In 2005, data from two separate studies on pregnant women showed evidence that Paxil was unsafe for use during pregnancy. Why? Well, when taken during the first trimester of pregnancy, it dramatically increased the risk of the unborn baby developing a terrible heart condition. In fact, taking the drug during pregnancy doubles the chances. These conditions range from minor to serious and irreparable.
How Did the FDA Respond to the Pregnancy Risk?
As a direct result of the aforementioned studies, the FDA took action. While they did not issue a Paxil recall, they did put out an alert that included a new warning label on the box. They then raised the drug from category C to category D, which prompts users to avoid the drug while pregnant. However, this warning does not make it illegal to use the drug.
A year before the FDA alert, Health Canada issued their own warning. Rather than focusing on Paxil use during the first trimester of pregnancy, this warning indicated that the drug was unsafe for use at the end of pregnancy, as it caused complications at birth. Some of these complications include:
- Seizures
- Difficulty with breathing
- Incessant crying
- Muscle rigidity and jitters
These symptoms led to the need for:
- Longer hospital stays
- Support for normal breathing
- Tube feeding
Did you take Paxil during your pregnancy? Did your baby experience any of the above negative outcomes?
Taking Paxil and Thinking about Getting Pregnant?
Please understand, we are a law firm—not a group of physicians. We are not here to give you medical advice, but we can say this: if you are attempting to get pregnant, it is possible that you will conceive and not even realize it. And if you are taking Paxil, that means you could unknowingly get well into your first trimester while still taking the drug. As a result, you will be putting your unborn baby in danger of heart defects.
That said, if you are taking the drug and considering pregnancy, please consult your physician immediately.
Paxil Offers a Long List of Other Negative Side Effects
The negative side effects detailed above really barely scratch the surface of what Paxil use can result in. Here are a few other ailments you may have found yourself facing after using the drug:
- Withdrawals — Quitting Paxil use is far from easy. In fact, if you are currently on it, we recommend consulting your doctor before trying to stop. Many Paxil users have reported everything from physical problems to depression and suicidal thoughts when attempting to quit.
- Skin problems — From acne to eczema, Paxil may drive you to searching out other prescription medications to deal with skin ailments.
- Gastrointestinal disorders — These include but are not limited to inflammation of the stomach and intestines, increased salivation and belching, abnormal liver function, and rectal hemorrhaging.
- Respiratory — Even if you have never had it before, you may develop asthma and similar breathing problems when taking Paxil.
